ChatGPT vs. Google: Why Ranking #1 Isn't Enough
You can sit at the top of Google and still be completely invisible when someone asks AI for the best lawyer in your area. Here's why those are two different games.
Most firms I talk to say a version of the same thing: "We're fine online — we rank well on Google, we've got the reviews, we pay for the directories." And it's usually true. But it answers the wrong question. Ranking on Google tells you how you do in one place. It tells you nothing about whether an AI assistant will recommend you — and that's quickly becoming where people start.
Two different questions
When someone searches Google, they get a list of links and decide for themselves. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity, the AI decides for them and hands back a short list of names. Those are fundamentally different mechanics, and they reward different things.
| Google Search | AI Search (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) |
|---|---|
| Returns a list of links | Returns a short list of named recommendations |
| The user chooses | The AI chooses for the user |
| Rewards rankings, keywords, backlinks | Rewards readability, structure, and trusted citations |
| You can be page-one and still get clicked | If you're not named, you don't exist in the answer |
That last row is the one that matters most. On Google, being in the top handful still gets you seen. In an AI answer, there is no "second page" to be on. You're either one of the three to five firms it names, or you're nowhere — and the person never even knows you were an option.
The trap: a great Google ranking can make a firm feel covered while it's quietly absent from every AI recommendation in its market. The better you're doing on Google, the easier it is to miss.
Why ranking doesn't carry over
AI tools don't simply read Google's rankings and repeat them. They build answers from sources they can read clearly and trust. Three things drive whether you get named:
- Readability — can the AI extract a clean answer about who you are, what you handle, and where? Many sites are built to impress human visitors, not to be quoted by a machine.
- Trusted citations — do the sources AI relies on (directories, reviews, reputable mentions) consistently point to you?
- Crawlability — can the systems that feed AI actually access your site, or are they blocked?
A firm can do well on traditional ranking factors and still fall short on all three. That's why the top-of-Google firm and the named-in-ChatGPT firm are often not the same firm.
What it means for your firm
It doesn't mean Google stops mattering — it means Google is no longer the whole picture. AI recommendation is a separate channel, it's growing fast, and right now it's wide open because almost no firms have optimized for it. The work to get named there — making your site readable to AI, building the right trust signals, and getting properly indexed — is specific, and the firms that do it first tend to hold the position.
