How AI Decides Which Lawyers to Recommend

When someone asks ChatGPT for the best lawyer in their city, a short list comes back. Ever wonder how the AI picks those names? Here's what's going on under the hood.

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity to recommend a lawyer and you get something Google never gave you: a decision. Instead of a list to sort through yourself, the AI picks a few firms and hands them to you. So how does it choose? It is not random, and it is not paid placement. It comes down to a few things.

1. Can it read you clearly?

An AI can only recommend a firm it understands. If your website plainly states who you are, what you handle, and where you practice — in language a machine can extract — you are a candidate. If that information is buried in marketing copy, images, or thin pages, the AI struggles to place you and moves on to a firm it can read.

2. Do trusted sources point to you?

AI tools lean heavily on corroboration. When legal directories, review platforms, your Google Business Profile, and reputable mentions consistently describe your firm the same way, that repetition builds the AI's confidence to name you. A firm that only describes itself, with little third-party validation, gives the AI less to go on.

3. Can the systems that feed it find you?

Some AI tools pull live results from search indexes when they answer. If your site is poorly indexed — or accidentally blocks the crawlers these tools use — you are missing from the pool before the question is even asked.

The key insight: AI recommendations are earned, not bought. That is good news for a firm willing to do the work — and a warning for one assuming its Google presence is enough.

Why the same firms keep appearing

Once a firm is readable and well-cited for a given search, the AI keeps surfacing it, because nothing has changed to give it a better answer. That is why a handful of firms dominate the recommendations in most markets — and why the firms that establish that position early tend to keep it. The recommendation spot is winnable, but it favors whoever gets there first.
